NOTD – Sally Hansen “Kook-A-Mango”

2 Comments 28 June 2011

I am still as in love as ever with the formula and finish of these polishes which are now available in Boots for £6.99, but I have to say I picked another shade up called “Angel Wings”, a pearly white with shimmer, and although it looked fab in the bottle it looked a bit “frosty old lady” on my hands. Twitter agreed , and I took it off to replace it with this shade. So unless you like frosty polishes, I’d say stick with the cream shades even in this range…

Anyway, this is shade 560 “Kook-A-Mango”. I love this for summer, and feel it would work equally well on toes or fingers…

This is a lovely bright coral-orange shade which stays away from being too neon or outrageous, but it’s still bright enough to make a statement. Love it! As always it’s just a shame I’m not slightly better at applying it and keeping application to the nails, and not slopping it all over my fingers and cuticles as well… oh well!

This shade gave decent coverage in 2-3 coats, and I’ve topped it off with Illamasqua’s top coat, which is great for adding a shine to the top of polishes.

From experience, I know these polishes last about three days before chipping on me, but I’m one of those careless types who can’t be bothered to put rubber gloves on to do the washing up and opens can’s with my nails etc. And I wonder why they break so often…

Have you tried any shades from this range? Are you loving them as much as me?

NOTD – Accessorize "Fudge"

This was one of the polishes I recently picked up from Superdrug… I’ve been on a bit of a polish extravaganza recently for some reason, so expect a few more NOTD’s (mostly drugstore..) over the next few days!

Accessorize polishes are currently only available in Superdrug, and retail at £4.50 each. They have some lovely shades, ranging from the wearable to the more unusual, so its well worth a look.

The shade Fudge is probably one of the most wearable in the range – Its a nude with a pinky blush undersone to it. Very pretty, very wearable and the pink blush means it works well on pink toned pale hands like mine…

Application was fine – the chunky lid is a bit of a pain to work with, I’d personally prefer a longer handle as it gives a bit more control. The brush itself is quite short and is standard, ie not a flat/wide/”pro” style brush. Personally I don’t mind that as often flat brushes are a bit too wide for my nails, especially on the little finger.

It’s a polish that definitely needs two coats though – the first coat does go on quite streaky and a little patchy, but the second coat resolves all that.

Wear is pretty average – I noticed some chipping on day 2 of wear, which isn’t amazing, so frankly I’d be a little disappointed if I’d paid more for it… I would pick up more from this range though, especially the more unusual shades.

Have you tried any of these polishes?
Would love your thoughts!

This was a GWP recently when I picked up a couple of things from the 17 range (I think it was a lipstick and the “Metallic Toffee” eye trio, which I promptly dropped on the floor and smashed when I got home… I truly fail at life on many levels.

Anyway, even though this was GWP, it is available in the regular 17 line, and they are currently on offer in Boots at 2 for £5.

For some reason, my camera is making this look a little more coral in the bottle than it actually is in real life – it’s a really hot pink, which falls on *just* the right side of fluorescent.

This is two coats applied without a top coat – the polish dries pretty fast, which I like. I despise having to open the door or pick up my phone using the “wet nail varnish” gingerly approach. This was touch dry in about five minutes.

It reminds me a little of Barry M’s Pink Flamingo, but is slightly sheerer.

Excuse the disgusting state of my nails too by the way. I’m still trying to get them back in some sort of reasonable shape after the box packing and cleaning extravaganza that went into moving house. I was in my local shopping centre the other day, and one of those new nail bars has opened where they can clip on a set of talons in about half an hour…

I know they will wreck my nails but I’m so tempted to have the instant results of long nails…

Decisions, decisions.

NOTD – Mavala Sweet…

I recieved this polish from a PR agency for review purposes…
This is one of the polishes from Mavala’s Spring collection…The “Belle” collection consists of six pretty pastel shades, and is due to hit shops very soon…

Sweet is a pretty pastel peach shade – for some reason it looks a little pink in the bottle shot above, but this shade is definitely peach at heart…

Close up, it looks like this…

As you can see, its a cream finish,  I really like this shade – its fresh, pretty and easy to wear. I also like the fact that it’s “work appropriate” but still eyecatching… I found it needed two coats to achieve “bottle colour”. The small bottle and brush takes a little getting uses to, but these mini bottles are often less wasteful – you get about ten manicures out of each bottle apparently, and at £3.95 they are a good way to try lots of different shades…

There are some lovely shades in the collection I have my eye on too – a pale gray(Berlin), and a lavender shade(Vitality)…

Mavala also do some great nail care products – I was given a couple to try, and will be reviewing those in due course…

Mavala is available in larger Debenhams, John Lewis, and some salons nationwide.

This was very very kindly gifted to me by the lovely Lipglossiping – her blog is fantastic, complete with amazing photos, and if you don’t already read it, then you can check it out HERE. Her blog is essential reading for me. She is humourous, honest and covers some great brands…

Lipglossiping recently claimed in this post that ASDA must be killing fairies for their blood to create these polishes, and I have to agree, there is something very special about these… Amazingly they apparently cost a mere £1.50 each? How is this possible? Yep, the bottles are a bit smaller than OPI, at 5mls, but at least you know they won’t go gloopy before you use them up…
This is the shade “Deceit”, which is a shimmering gunmetal grey-blue shade. Formula wise, this was fab, neither too thick or too thin. Application was a cinch, with a decent brush, considering the price range, and yes, they are indeed fast drying- I’d say 5 minutes to touch dry.

The pic above shows a two coat application, whilst below is a close up of one nail;
So there you go – basically, these polishes get a big thumbs up from me – Price wise they are fab, and formula wise they tick all the boxes. And judging by Lipglossiping’s ravings thoughts on the matter, there are also some lovely shades. I’m planning on a special ASDA trip just to check out more of these!
Oh – any thought on the pics too? I have a new camera and I am still getting used to the vast array of settings – all tips and pointers greatly appreciated!

I picked up this little bobby dazzler in London yesterday. I couldn’t wait to apply it. In fact I applied it over the nail varnish I was wearing already – Illamasqua’s Muse, and it totally Christmassified it (thats a real word), with a holographic sheen… Its really pretty on its own though…

Really though, for the price I forked out – an eye watering £16 – (its truly amazing what the word “Limited Edition” do to me… they turn me into a stoopid eejit), I *should* have just waited and ebayed, but I was gripped by that whole fear that I might never see it again.
Its such a beautiful holographic silver shade – here is a close up;

Thanks ever so much to the Mister for taking these pics for me – my crap camera didn’t have a hope in hell of capturing the beauty of this shade. As demonstrated by myself and fellow blogger Get Lippie yesterday, this is also on top of other shades (she painted it over the gold beige she was wearing).

Please though – if you like this shade, EBay it – don’t allow the counter at Selfridges to “violate” you like I did…

Whenever I get to go to Londonceistershire (my lil nickname for London), I like to take advantage of the shopping opportunities which are available there and get a few bits I can’t get near me. One of my firm faves is the OPI counter at Selfridges in the vast mecca known as the beauty hall…

While I was milling about having a wonder and avoiding sales pitches from over enthusiastic counter staff (an exhausting job in itself…) I bumped into the lovely sirvinya (real name Becky!) and Oxford Jasmine (real name erm… Jasmine lol), who were also headed that way…

Becky got very excited when she saw this polish, and so did I when I took a closer look… Initially you see, this polish doesn’t look like much in the bottle, a plummy brown colour with a bit of sparkle… except when you look closer the glitter is minute, and there is like billions of bits of it in the bottle…

This gives the polish an amazing holographic effect, which my camera fails completely to capture…

Here is a further attempt to capture the colour in an “extreme close up” (Anyone remember Bill and Ted – those were the days when Keanu Reeves accepted himself for what he was, and didn’t try to do “proper acting…)

Once again, Total FAIL at capturing the prettiness…

This nail varnish is dark and vampy, it cant quite decide whether it wants to a be a brown, a plum, or a grey, so it does all three. Then we have the teeny weeny shimmery bits which reflect gold, green, pink, purple… its lovely!

If you would like to see some better pics then I highly recommend that you go and have a look at this post on the Helen and Sheenies fab blog…

I really really want to try more Holo polishes, and I need recommendations please?

PS – I met a certain BritishBeautyBlogger for lunch and showed her this one – she went and bought it straight away!

NOTD – Barry M, Pink Flamingo…

17 Comments 28 July 2009

Having seen this on a few other blogs I was very happy to be given a sample to try when I was in London last week – while I may have issues with some of the lip-paints they make in terms of formula and colour (101 is as dry as the sahara and my sister actually uses it as a concealer – she loves it for that and that alone!), I have to say I have long been a fan of the nail paints – the only one I wasn’t a huge fan off is the black (because it is actually not black – its navy, and you need to apply a lot of coats to get decent colour density…)

Good Gawd, this is a bright one, but in a very very good way! I applied two coats and got “bottle colour”, and its definitely a winning summer colour – great for both toes and fingers. Nice and creamy in consistency and well pigmented – it dried well with the help of seche vite!

This is available now on the Barry M Website – keep an eye out for this in the shops (from Aug 5th) too, as there are usually decent offers on Bazza products in both Boots and Superdrug…
