Your Chance to Meet Paula “The Cosmetic Cop” Begoun.

No Comments 16 May 2011

One of the things I am constantly aware of when I review products, especially skincare, is ingredients. Sometimes you feel like you need a BS detector to separate out stuff that is actually known to benefit the skin, and things that just seem to be manufactured by advertising bods to part us from our hard earned cash.  Is it just me, or does the feeling that you are maybe, just maybe being conned, take the fun out of choosing products?

This is basically also the thinking behind the line Paula’s choice, which was created by Paula Begoun, who has over thirty years in the cosmetics industry. The line aims to take out the guesswork behind skincare, as only scientifically proven ingredients are involved in the products, and from what I can gather it’s already a well established brand in the US, and is now available in the UK HERE.

The Paula’s Choice line is focused on both basic skincare, as well as targeting problems in the skin. One thing that impresses me about the website for the line is that there is a huge section in which she reviews other ranges, recommending them or otherwise based on the efficacy of their key ingredients. Having read through a few of her reviews, I like the way the site just seems to offer an objective opinion rather than just dissing poor products and pushing their own line.

Two new “hero” products which sound interesting have recently been launched in the RESIST, anti-ageing line. First of all the RESIST daily smoothing treatment with 5% AHA combines glycolic and salicylic acids to clear blemishes and stimulate collagen production. There is also the RESIST super antioxidant serum which supports the action of the smoothing treatment and boosts the level of antioxidants in the skin, reducing the speed of ageing.

There’s also a great contest running at the moment, so if you’d like to meet Paula “The Cosmetic Cop” Begoun, in London for a spot of afternoon tea ( during which you will have the chance to ask all the questions about skincare you ever wanted to), then all you need to do is subscribe to her newsletter HERE, before 31st May 2011, which will mean you are both entered into the draw and you’ll also be kept up to date with any new products in the line.

Paula Begoun

The prizes on offer are;

1st prize: Three people will win afternoon tea sessions with Paula Begoun (including transport to London).

2nd prize: Two people will win Paula’s Choice skin care sets (worth £135 per set).

3rd prize: Ten people will win a personally autographed copy of Paula’s best-selling book ‘Don’t go to the cosmetics counter without me.’

Winners will be informed via email by 01/06/2011. Please note this draw is restricted to UK citizens only.

Contest Time!

70 Comments 04 August 2009

Well, its about that time again… lets get carried away with our creative sides and play with colour and have a lot of fun in the process… It’s my absolute pleasure to announce that the theme for the next Illamasqua contest is (drumroll please!)…..

So dig out your comic books guys and girls, and lets play!!!

Without further ado…

The rules

There will be two categories for the contest – ie Superheroes and villains. You can enter either or both categories. After a lot of discussion, we have decided to continue to allow people to enter as many times as they like, however, please remember that your favourite look that you have created may not necessarily be the one that myself and Krystle choose to go through to the finalists. If similar issues arise as did with the last contest as a result of our decision, we may be forced to reassess this, and limit everyone to one entry, which we really don’t want to do!
The contest is about makeup, not costumes – you don’t need to go out hiring a costume or anything like that!

Your entry may either be in the form of a blog post or a video on you tube – if you decide to do a video entry, then please also email me stills for judging purposes

Your entry should be your interpretation of a hero or a villain, your look must be original. In your entry, please tell us a bit about your hero/villain, about any superpowers that have and what led you to the look you have created. You don’t need to go into massive detail, but we love to know about what inspires people!

When you have completed your entry, please post a response below to let me know, and make sure I acknowledge your entry by commenting back – feel free to harass me til I do this! I do not want to miss anyones hard work!

Use any products you like, and tell us about what you used (ie you do not have to use Illamasqua!)

Its fine to use a willing volunteer if you do not wish to be photographed yourself, however, the look MUST have been created by you.

The contest is open internationally

Please make sure you subscribe to the blog.

The contest will close at midnight UK time on friday the 4th September (which is slightly more than 1 month!).

Finalists will be selected by myself and Krystal – the winners will then be chosen by Alex Box, who has kindly agreed to be the final judge! Winners will be announced approx a week later. Judges decisions are final!

Final prizes to be announced, there will be ONE winner in Each Category – ie one SuperHero and one Villain, but each will win some lovely makeup of their choice from Illamasqua… Winning looks will be published on this blog and the Illamasqua blog

Remember – BE CREATIVE, HAVE FUN AND BE ORIGINAL!

Good Luck!!!!

Myths and Legends – THE FINALISTS!

19 Comments 09 July 2009

I want to start off by saying a MASSIVE thank you to all the entrants who all obviously put tonnes of hard work, time and effort into their looks, not to mention researching various mythology on the internet! Unfortunately, we can’t give prizes to you all (we have to pay our bills for one thing, lol), so after much deliberation we have managed to pick six finalists.

OK, So me and my fellow judge (thank god I have a fellow judge, I’d be rocking in a corner somewhere now going quietly deranged otherwise!) Krystal have been busy discussing these overnight and this morning!

So , in, no particular order! (All the finalists pics will be winging their way to Alex Box at Illamasqua, who has the unenviable task of chosing the two winners!)

First off, this fantastic last minute entry from Cat (http://swirledpeacat.blogspot.com/), Cat is relatively new to the blogging world, but already has a well deserved following! Her look is based on Senua, the Lost Goddess (http://swirledpeacat.blogspot.com/2009/07/senua-lost-goddess.html). Krystal and I clearly have a “thing” for unusual eyelashes lol!
Next, we have this fab entry based on Hera, the greek goddess of marriage and childbirth. Loved the poses girl! This is from the fab Belle Du Jour (http://belledujournewyorkcity.blogspot.com/). We love how Belle focussed on her eyes, creating a really effective look. Belle also did a fab valley of the dolls entry, which you can see on her blogspot.

Next up we have an entry based on the greek legend of Medusa, from new blogger Unicorn Smile (http://unicornsmilebeauty.blogspot.com/). It was the little details we loved with this one, as well as the overall look – the fanged effect on the lips and the creation of a snakeskin effect tights were the little creative touches we thought gave this one the edge!

Next Up, we have this look from Amy Allen (http://amyallensworld.blogspot.com/), based on the native americal myth of “The Spider Grandmother”. We loved the use of the embellished false lashes, and the incorporation of the web into the design!

An amazing original and editorial take on the Medusa look from Jackie, who created four amazing entries in all, but this was our favourite – he’s a very talented young fella, and his blog (http://ohthenews.blogspot.com/) is definately worth a look! We had a really hard time chosing between this and the cupid look Jackie created – but the imaginative use of colour and the fact that we though this look would just fit in on the catwalks was what gave this one the edge!

And last, but by no means least, we have an entry from Piggy at http://makeup-piggy.blogspot.com/. Again, piggy gave us three amazing entries, and we had a hard time chosing which one to go with, but we both really loved the detailing and seductive looks of her Succubus inspired look . Piggy obviously worked really hard on her entries and even included face charts!

Once again, thank you to all of the lovely people who did entries, like I said, I really wish we could give more prizes! Well done to all our finalists! Stay tuned for the winners who will be announced as soon as possible!

Contest Inspiration: Seth "The Destroyer"

An egyptian myth now, telling the twisted tale of brothers Seth and Osiris.

Regarded as the Lord of Northern Egypt, He was represented by a big-eared imaginary animal with red hair resembling a donkey or maybe an aardvark, and was associated with the desert and storms. He was also associated with Pigs (regarded as unclean animals) and also creatures which were associated with chaos- Hippopotamus, Crocodiles and Snakes.

For many years, Seth was the ruler of Lower (Northern) Egypt; just as Horus protected Upper Egypt. When the Two Lands became united, Seth and Horus were often shown together crowning the new pharaohs. However, as Upper Egypt had conquered Lower Egypt, the pharaohs of the south often portayed Seth as the evil enemy of Horus

Seth was the brother of Osiris. Seth never had any children, as emphasis of his association with the barren desert.

Seth (also known as Set) is most famous for murdering his brother Osiris and attempting to murder Osiris’ son Hurus. Horus, however, survived and avenged his father’s death by ruling all of Egypt and exiling Seth to the desert for all time.

The decision to banish Seth came from a counsel of the gods, ruled by Re. Most of the gods agreed that Horus was the rightful heir to the throne of Egypt, but Re disagreed, believing Horus to be too young for such power. The trial was only ended by Isis’ cunning.

Isis transformed herself into a beautiful young woman. Seth saw her with tears streaming down her face and asked what the matter was. Isis told Setha story of an evil man who had killed a young woman’s husbandand was trying to steal her family’s flocks. Seth became angry at her plight and insisted that the evil man be destroyed and that the young woman’s son should inherit the family’s estate. By his own words, Seth condemned himself, and lost the throne of Egypt.

The fallen angel Satan (the Morning Star) is believed to be a second personification of Seth

Contest Inspiration: Lilith, The "Demon Queen"

An interesting little tale of Jewish origin!

Due to my lack of culture I was only aware of the existence of Lilith as a Demon from the TV series “Supernatural”, but as usual, the true roots of this tale are for more intruiging than a TV show!
It is told that Lilith is the original companion of Adam, created by God in the garden of Eden. She was created at the same time, of the same dust as Adam (ie, not created after Adam from his Rib, as Eve was). Lilith was a bit of a feminist and she refused to accept that she was anything less than equal to Adam, and refused to submit to him in any way – including sexually. It it written that Lilith refused to engage with Adam in the Missionary position, and prefered to go on top! Unfortunately Adam’s response to this was to force Lilith to submit to his will.

Lilith flew from Adam that very night to a cave, where she cavorted and fornicated with hordes of Demons. She is reputed to have produced a hundred demonic offspring everyday (one busy lady!) and hence earned herself the title of “Demon Queen” – her offspring are thought to account for every single demon in existence today!

Lilith is a SUCCUBUS demon – the femmes-fatales of the demon world who engage with human males in erotic activities whilst they sleep… Lilith is actually also mentioned in the bible, as inhabiting a hostile wasteland – “And Lilith shall repose there” (Isaiah 34:14).

Lilith was sent to tempt King Soloman as he studied the Torah – as she manifested in front of him, the letters of the book flew from the pages. He looked up to see a “strikingly beautiful, dark-haired woman”, but recognised her for the demon she was when he realised she had no reflection.

Lilith is reported to have married Asmodeus – the demon of Wrath and Lust, and the couple can reputedly be seen in the dark as apair of black dogs who roam the empty streets.

Contest News – The Mystery Prize is finally Revealed!

8 Comments 01 July 2009

OK first of all, a reminder – The contest CLOSES ON THE 7TH JULY AT MIDNIGHT UK TIME so please get those entries in asap!

Secondly, as you know the first place winner is recieving a mystery prize – well, this is a mystery no more! I have now learned what the prize is and also more about its Launch!

So the winner will recieve a brand new product which is called a powdered metal -

“Whats a powdered metal?” I hear you ask?

Well according to Illamasqua “Powdered Metal is a gloriously shimmering powder for face and body. Available in three dazzling shades, the intense metallic finish leaves skin glowing, and perfectly complements our current Sirens collection.”

The company have decided to do an exclusive launch of the product at Manchester’s Trafford Centre counter in Selfridges – Their National Makeup Artist Adam Sidwell will be demonstrating the product in the “dome” of the shopping centre from the 8th to the 11th of July and will also be available for makeup lessons and makeovers (£15 – redeemable against any product from Illamasqua – you can book on 0161 629 1187). I’m booked in on the Friday so I hope a few of you can make it?

As you know the product is not launching nationally or on the website till about a week later, which means our winner will recieve this at the same time as it hits counters in the rest of the country! I’m going to be getting a sneak preview of these soon too, so I’ll let you know what I think of them all – I’m told that they did well on the tube yesterday in the 40 degree heat in London though, which is impressive!

I’m well pleased they decided to launch at Manchester for once – London usually get all the good stuff!

So PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PEOPLE, GET THOSE ENTRIES IN!!! Remember we are more worried about people having FUN, coming up with ORIGINAL MAKEUP LOOKS and being INSPIRED than having world class makeup artist skills! So get inspired and get creative!

Loving/Not Loving

11 Comments 08 April 2009

Hi everyone…

So I haven’t done one of these for ages, and I love reading everyone elses, so I thought its high time I did one!

Today I am Loving!
  • The fact that my work trousers feel a bit looser after two weeks off – I don’t know how though!
  • The Apprentice
  • Finishing work half an hour early
  • My bargain superdrug foundation brush! Works better than a MAC flat brush and cost about £3.50. And it applies cream blush fabulously too!
  • Finding what seems to be the only pair of socks in my possession with no holes in the toes!
  • Reaquainting myself with workplace humour and finding out one of my favourite people who left is coming back!
  • Lily Allen’s album at full blast in my lil’ car on the way to/from work
  • Coming home to find an email from Illamasqua waiting for me
  • Body shop lip butter!
  • Snog, Marry, Avoid on BBC3 – An abject lesson in the fine line between dramatic looks and just looking like an old slapper!
  • The amazing entries we have recieved to the contest!

Not Loving so Much!

  • Horne and Corden on BBC3… It should have been so much better!
  • Doing a late shift today and then having an early shift tomorrow.
  • Having a headache. All evening…
  • Being back at work and not able to lounge and enjoy twitter, blogging, youtube….
  • Having rubbish in-between-lengths hair… It’s driving me mad! I long to get it all chopped off again!
  • Knowing there are only socks with holes in in my drawer tomorrow – time to go clothes shopping instead of makeup shopping me thinks!
  • The heels on my new boots being knackered already!

;-) )
