When the Love Goes…

Its so sad when a product you thought you liked turns out to be a mistake…

When I first started blogging, I went for a NARS makeover, and I picked up their Firming foundation (the one in the black bottle). At the time, I was pretty pleased with it. It was my first NARS purchase (amongst the few other things I picked up that day, ahem…).

I skipped right over the implication that I might need a “firming” product of any kind, and instead focused on the promises that the product made about skin benefits etc, and to be fair I really liked it at first. I thought it looked fairly polished and fresh on the skin

Then another foundation came along (I can’t remember which one, there have been so many, possibly RMK powder foundation) and turned my head… The NARS sat in my foundation drawer (yes, I have a “foundation drawer”, thats how bad my addiction to the stuff is…), hygenically sealed (and might I add, this foundation has a pump, so no bacteria getting in, which means the chances of it having “gone off” are not massive). Now when I say it was in my drawer, I’m talking LESS than a year since purchasing it

Sat there that is, until the other day, when in a fit of nostalgia, I got it out, shook it well and applied it in the normal manner, over my usual primer (RMK), with my fingers, as its designed to be applied, and stood back to admire my handiwork…

From a distance it looked fine, but about half an hour later I went to wash my hand and glanced up in the bathroom mirror. Even in the paltry “lighting” (and I use the term loosely) in the bathroom, I could see patches where the foundation just looked “clumpy” – thats seriously the only way I can describe it. Patches, streaks and areas of oxidation littered my face. And this is not a result of my application – I regularly apply foundation with my fingers, and NEVER get results as bad as this. It was truly awful. Needless to say, my face was scrubbed, and a decent foundation applied (In this case I believe it was the Laura Mercier one…) All I can say is THANK GOD I realised before I left the house…

Allow me to demonstrate…

Above – a little of the foundation pumped onto the back of my hand – looks innocuous enough, and actually a decent colour match for me too…

Above – the foundation rubbed in with fingers and smoothed the way I would apply to my face etc… not too bad so far, but you can actually see the start of some clumping on the right there…

Above – not even five minutes laterit clumping up, and seems to be just “sitting” on the skin – to the touch it feels greasy, and the problem intensifies when powder is added, because then it starts to oxidise – It is actually going more orange as I type…

Now of course, I am left with a bottle of foundation I paid over £30 for, and I just can’t face the thought of using it ever again… FAIL! What to do? The only saving grace is the pump, which I’m wondering might fit the NARS sheer glow if I ever give in to that particular urge?

Has anyone else tried this product? Had better/worse results than me?

  1. Don't feel bad, I have a foundation drawer, too ;-)Seriously this is gross but it's not the first time I've heard of Nars products going bad way quicker than any other brand, so that's probably what's happening here.

I would have thought that at that price this foundation would have been much better than that. So disappointing for you. I have never tried a Nars foundation but I am thinking about giving Sheer Glow a go. I don't have a foundation drawer but I do own a lot of foundations too:) Oops

Omg wow! That is really bad…NARS' forte is definitely NOT foundation that's for sure! Can you swap it?

@Tali and @Aleksis – I very much doubt it – I bougt it too long ago to swap it… I'll be sticking with their shadows/blushers from now on…@Jenny and Musings – its good to know I'm not the only one!

That looks yucky! Well, I haven't tried any of their foundations yet, but was thinking of looking into the Sheer Glow and Sheer Matt ones…not sure if I still want to, though, after reading this! I did try their double-ended concealer once, but hated it with a vengeance, a pointless but expensive tube of nothing (to put it nicely……). Thank God they make good blushes and eyeshadows!! xx

This is why I stick to Revlon Colourstay. I loooove it.xoxox

  8. Oh no!!! thats terrible… I actually have just fallen in love with the Sheer Glow and Matte, but from the sound of this i better make sure I use them up quickly. xx

  9. Oh no! It's awful when you've spent a lot of money and then end up not liking it! I've been there myself!I've tagged you btw, check out my blog :) x

  10. A similar thing happened to me this morning using a radiance enhancing primer that had virtually chunky glitter in it as the radiance enhancer. It looked ridiculous so it was a complete wash off when I didn't really have time to do it..grrr.

The new Nars foundations are like death masks. THey suck all the life and color out of your face! Thank god i kept away!!
